Perspective on 3D vertically-integrated photonic neural networks based on VCSEL arrays

Abstract The rapid development of artificial intelligence has stimulated the interest in novel designs photonic neural networks. As three-dimensional (3D) networks, diffractive networks (DNNs) relying on phenomena light, demonstrated their superb performance direct parallel processing two-dimensional (2D) optical data at speed light. Despite outstanding achievements, DNNs utilize centimeter-scale devices to generate input passively, making miniaturization and on-chip integration a challenging task. Here, we provide our perspective utilizing addressable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays as promising device integrated platform achieve compact, active for next-generation vertical-stacked Based VCSEL array, micron-scale 3D chip with modulation bandwidth tens GHz can be available. possible future directions challenges are analyzed.
